Mitch's Boyhood Friends

For her second commission, Yvette McDonald asked Sharron to art direct her son Mitchell.  Mitch's room in the families' brand new home at North Lakes Brisbane was tastefully decorated in blue, green and red with a simple dinosaur theme and toy arrangement.  Sharron suggested painting Mitch's toys...and in doing so creating art that could be handed down to his children later in life.  She photographed them and projected each onto canvas, charcoaled them in and emailed the drafts to Yvette for approval.

For the room, Sharron suggested purchasing a new circular shag pile rug which soon Yvette found (circles reduce formality), a red leather chair for enjoying books in with a funky 2 tone glossy pile or shag blue and green cushion to match, shelf lining for the bookcase in green or blue and another side table with lamp for night time reading in a matching solid colour or in black and white, possibly a spot pattern not a stripe pattern already used in the decor - a leaf, floral or check would be fine.  Painting the skirts and window trims in a greyed down red would look great for extra effect if wanted.

Once the drafts were approved and to make life easy for Mitch, Sharron, cut a series of masks for each which could be taken away in succession as each artwork progressed.  This saves hours in painting time!  Mitch didn't loose patience, though he sure was hungry all day!  He painted with commitment, asking lots of questions and really grasping the process and the new skills Sharron was teaching him.

He loved learning to splat paint and got totally covered in the stuff!  Thankfully it washes off easily in the bath despite its archival qualities on canvas and the results...Yvette and the family were stoked and so proud of young Mitchell who really was North Lakes' genius that day!
