Warren and Phoebe have made a gorgeous home for themselves upon a hilltop at Cedar Creek near Samford, Brisbane. They've been working hard on their home, even creating their own art...but not being entirely satisfied they called us.
The first thing we checked was the open plans colour as something wasn't right. The chef's kitchen was built in a Yellow Orange timber whereas the floor and furniture were all in a Red Orange. The couple had painted large walls feature Red. We suggested this be softened with a Red Orange texture overlay and the effect, though subtle, warmed and softened the home.
The Yellow Orange was also present in the dining areas parquetry floor. It was obvious that this colour needed a strong presence in the planned artworks. The existing artworks were oversized for the space. The receding entry way into the hall presented an opportunity to build story, colour, interest and depth, so a set of 8 square artworks were designed to match 2 larger square pieces.
With tightly clustered rolling hills outside, lakes, fruit trees and native gums bringing the outside in was a nice story and gave merit to a stylised feel, semi abstract, quirky but not over the top. Seasons in the decor colours are presented with Autumn and Spring. Gold and Silver leaf glitter gorgeously in the changing light streaming through the windows either side of this magnificent space.
Phoebe asked for WOW factor. She said later that she has it now and is so happy. We already have second job and many more to come working together, client and artists, to achieve the dream home.
Decor Tips
- Timbers need to be the same throughout a decor or they will draw the eye.
- If you have different coloured timbers, then balance the colours around your space in art, accessories, cushions, rugs etc.
- Large walls don't have to be filled to the max. Leave space.
- Watch the line the eye travels along i.e along tops of doors, pelmets, cupboards, window frames. Where the eye has to dip or rise, this creates disruption and busyness. Line artworks up along the tops and so the centre of the art is at eye line, then line the bottoms. This of course affects your canvas sizes, but it gets them right.
- Build story in your decor. In this home it is travel and the outdoors. Look for ways to give more story or theme in your home.
- If something stands out, it is most likely not in its' best position.
- Large things for large spaces, small things for small spaces. Bright colours for large spaces, softer colours for smaller spaces.
- Red is an advancing colour as is Black. These two will come forward and stand out in your space so use them wisely. Yellow and Green will actually recede and create more space.
